This will look like an ashy, white substance around the battery terminals (the positive and negative metal connections on the top of the battery).

Swollen or Bloated Battery

When exposed to excessive heat or cold the battery case may become swollen, decreasing the life of your car battery.

Low Level Battery Fluid

Some car batteries have a transparent part of the casing, or a service plug, to monitor the battery fluid level. If the fluid level is below the lead plates your battery may be overcharging, which can cause the battery to overheat.
